I was never on the Bendis hype train when he was given a dozen titles to work on. I read this to get a bit more introspection on the Skrulls seeing as they are one of the dominant races in the Marvel Universe and I am excited to see them finally come to life on the big screen with Captain Marvel.Secret Invasion has a phenomenal first 6 issues. It's pacing is rapid fire, it's scope is epic, but it's conclusion is bland. I give it four stars because Bendis really makes you believe this could happen, falling the most intelligent beings on earth, infiltrating the most powerful organizations and in the blink of an eye the marvel universe is transported into utter chaos. Bendis picks the perfect scenes to highlight the severity and scope while also making it incredibly personal for Iron Man, Ronin (hawkeye) and Mr. Fantastic. My biggest complaint is the last two issues cram so much into each frame I usually have to spend a minute or two actually discovering what each hero is doing. By no means is the art bad it's just the battle is so massive it gets messy and ultimately impersonal.Didn't offer much insight on the Skrull as a species but definitely an entertaining piece that I can recommend. Just wish we focused on the main character to give the final battle more weight. Besides some amazing tie-ins (which are not in this volume) and the Dark Reign arc that follows Secret Invasion, honestly I don't see why this story hadn't been told in just a couple of issues: one for the fight in the island and the other for the fight in New York. End.Bendis usually works well the different personalities of the heroes, but here I think he fails completely. The skrulls have plotted an invasion to Earth and revenge on the superheroes by infiltrating their ranks, so they will not be capable to fight, they are correct but suddenly the Earth defenders change their minds and just kill anybody. Admittedly Marvel heroes aren't as set against killing adversaries as their DC counterparts, but here the plot armour pushes the Skrulls to take many complicated steps to preserve the lives of every human they should kill; inversely the human "heroes" just shot to kill when they aren't sure of the identity, magically without killing any friend, and they kill the skrulls like they were just extras. It doesn't feel like killing in war but killing just for the sake of it. About the narration I have objections too, between the issues 7 and 8 it seems like there is an absent issue, is not clear how the war was won as it is told as a vague memory, is a pretty weak ending. Bendis has done amazing arcs for the different groups of Avengers but this is not among those. I would recommend instead to get some of the tie-ins as among them there are great stories which feel more like a long lasting event than this event that feels like an afternoon occurrence.
